Fernandina Beach Golf Club Fernandina Beach

There is no East Course at Fernandina Beach Golf Club for a simple reason. "A good driver and a wedge east of our clubhouse and you'd be in a huge bunker, next to a big water hazard, the Atlantic Ocean," says Director of Golf Scott Womble. But the North, South, and West Courses offer "Great Golf All Around", a challenging and fun 27-hole alternative to the big (and significantly more expensive) resort courses on Amelia Island. All three layouts are different (a par-35, a par-36 and a par-37); are extremely playable (with fewer sand and water hazards than many Florida-style courses); and not only allow walking, but encourage it.

You can also get a lesson in Florida golf history at Fernandina Beach Golf Club. The North nine is the oldest course on the island, a par-35 designed in 1956 by Ed Matteson, and probably the easiest and most enjoyable of the layouts. It is "old" Florida golf.

Matteson's West Course, opened in 1959, is considered by many to be a bit tougher, and is most certainly longer'600 yards longer from the two back tees--traceable to the enormous par-5 second hole, measuring 607 yards from the tips and 590 from the men's tees.

In 1972, longtime pro Tommy Birdsong designed the South nine, paying homage to more northern-style courses as it carves its way through the oak forests of the area. The par-36 layout is much tighter, a perfect complement to its sister courses.

All paths lead back to the very spacious and functional full-service clubhouse with a fully-stocked Golf Shop and a snack bar that features one of the great little secrets of this club, made-to-order breakfasts to go with the usual lunchtime sandwiches and grille fare. The banquet staff takes pride in its catering abilities, whether for a small or large golf outing, wedding reception, business meeting, party or other gathering of up to 150 guests in a banquet room overlooking the first tee of the West course.

Having 27 holes gives Fernandina Beach Golf Club the flexibility to host golf outings of any size, and still allow for individual and member play. The Men's and Women's Associations are growing and very active, in keeping with the lifestyle on Amelia Island.

Exemplary in its presentation of service and substance, Fernandina Beach Golf Club is a great golf getaway from the commotion of Jacksonville.
