Bobby Weed Created a Masterpiece in Orange Park

The Golf Club at Fleming IslandPublic golfers can discover why club members are already so comfortable here: a casually elegant clubhouse with fully stocked pro shop; a nicely appointed restaurant; an outside snack bar; and a porch for relaxing. The meeting room and administration staff can provide for the business part of a rewarding day of golf at Fleming Island. The large practice tee with five target greens, a sand trap and putting green create the environment for an effective pre-round warm-up and for professional golf staff instruction.

Fleming Island Club’s excellent facilities are a fitting introduction to the exciting par-71 design of Bobby Weed. Five tee settings offer yardages ranging from 4,881 to 6,801. From a blank canvas of ordinary timber and wetlands, Weed sketched two nines of differently styled golf. The front nine is open, with waste areas and wetlands creating a links feeling. The back nine has been carved out of standing timberland, providing an atmosphere of solitude, all within the context of the natural terrain.

Fairways may not always be as tight as they seem from the tees, but elevation changes and undulations cause drives to roll to less friendly lies and shot angles to greens. Line of sight to many greens is interrupted by berms and moguls, creating more difficult shots. Water is abundant,
but rarely comes into play. Traps don’t rise up with glaring intimidation... they mostly lie low, running alongside the greens, waiting quietly for you.

Weed designed The Golf Club At Fleming Island not to defeat the golfer through dramatic intimidation, but to challenge him subtly, using the natural surroundings. If the Fleming Island Club were an animal, it would be an alligator lying quietly, unseen, waiting for his prey to make its own mistakes. You’ll enjoy the challenge to make the fewest possible.
