On Wednesday May 7, McCumber, who is now a successful golf course designer, will be honored during the week of THE PLAYERS in recognition of the 20th anniversary of his historic victory. ASGCA Architects work to address problems of the pace of play Print E-mail
Tuesday, 08 April 2008

Pace of play is an issue often discussed at the player level. But, members of the American Society of Golf Course Architects are also addressing this at the design level. ASGCA architects work to address pace of play issue

"A properly designed, well-drained course with ample playable areas, properly placed bunkers, visible water hazards and smaller greens usually plays fastest," said Steve Forrest, president. "ASGCA architects work with developers to design courses that are challenging but not overwhelming. This keeps play moving without detracting from the player’s overall experience."

Courses offering faster play usually benefit from a combination of factors including quality professional management, and the cooperation both of those playing and those directing play. However, according to Forrest, faster play also results from course designs that pay special attention to routing designs and tactical layouts of tees, greens and fairways.

Smoke’s on Fire Print E-mail
Friday, 04 April 2008

Aroma Cigars It is said by many that old habits die hard. That adage couldn’t ring more true for smoking tobacco in its oldest form, the cigar. Not only has cigar smoking remained a constant, and been present throughout the settling of the Americas, but it has grown and adapted, seemingly relighting itself in today’s popular culture.

At no time in history has cigar smoking been as hot as it is right now, which is a laudable achievement because of the intensifying backlash against the use of tobacco across the country. A number of communities in the U.S. have proposed or adopted bans on smoking in a number of public places. Numerous magazines, newsletters and web sites are devoted to the cigars and those who appreciate them. It’s common place to see low quality cigars at almost every shop counter, as well as fully stocked humidors in liquor stores and wine outlets.
